JOB SUMMARY

Three-year program training to Inspect, repair and maintain, in a safe, efficient, timely, cost-effective and practical manner, the equipment the Company uses to transport and handle goods, including: single and tandem axle diesel over-the-road and city tractors; diesel, city straight trucks; electric-, propane-, and diesel-powered industrial forklifts; over-the-road and city trailers of various makes and configurations; and converter gear of varied design.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Comply with all company policies, local work and safety rules, as well as federal, state, and local regulations that govern the industry. Perform the required paperwork and/or computer records accordingly.

  2. Repair, a wide variety of diesel engines in transportation vehicles and dock equipment.

  3. Inspect, repair, replace and modify components of engines including drive lines, transmissions, brake systems, clutches, and steering assemblies.

  4. Repair or replace ingnition parts, diesel injectors and carburetors.

  5. Repair or replace faulty parts including wheel bearings, shock absorbers, oil seals, emission systems, exhaust systems, generators, distributors, lights and switches.

  6. Perform routine servicing, lubricating, and greasing of vehicles.

  7. Perform electronic diagnostics and troubleshoot electrical systems; repair and replace faulty components including wiring.

  8. Use welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen various equipment parts.

  9. Replace bumpers, fenders and farings. Install unit numbers and door logos.

  10. Determine serviceability and replacement needs for vehicles and equipment.

  11. Maintain an inventory of fluids, parts, and equipment, and perform some physical plant maintenance.

  12. Remove, repair, and mount tires and maintain the tire inventory.

  13. Drive and operate tractor trailers and other vehicles in congested and crowded areas to pull units in and out of shop facilities to service them and return them to service once repaired.

  14. Maintain records of time and materials used on each job, the condition of the equipment, and the repairs performed.

  15. Perform pre-trip equipment inspections, including ensuring that permits are valid and units are clean and fueled.

  16. Participate in training programs; maintain and update safety skills and knowledge; keep current with hazardous material training requirements.

  17. Perform duties in a manner that promotes superior customer service and professionalism within the company and the industry.

Job Requirements

SPECIAL SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.

  2. Training and education in principles of diesel engine mechanics as applied to the maintenance and repair of transportation equipment.

  3. Must have the ability to use tools and equipment of the trade and preventative maintenance inspection methods.

  4. Must be willing to invest in core mechanic tools, to perform your job functions.

  5. Must have ability to learn in the areas of equipment hydraulics maintenance, maintenance of carburetors, acetylene and arc welding, and engine electronics.

  6. Must be able to learn inspecting and analyzing defects in equipment and use a variety of tools with skill. Must be able to estimate the cost and time of repairs and keep work records.

  7. Must learn to drive and operate tractor trailers and other vehicles in congested and crowded areas.

  8. Must have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

  9. Must be able to read, write and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, read orders and work instructions, and make accurate entries in the daily log.

  10. Must be able to follow posted safety rules and safe operating procedures to insure proper techniques, such as lifting, are performed in the manner as which is described.

  11. Ability and willingness to work all scheduled hours, including overtime.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to stand, walk, sit, and maintain balance for extensive periods of time.

  2. Ability to frequently lift up to 58 lbs from 0" to 36" and carry objects up to 50 feet. Occasionally lift up to 80 lbs.

  3. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl frequently to work on vehicles and equipment.

  4. Ability to frequently twist, push, and pull from a variety of positions to work on equipment. Ability to frequently grip and grasp mechanic tools and parts. Manipulative skills and dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools.

  5. Ability to frequently climb to get in vehicles, on a step ladder to reach the engine compartment and stairs. Ability to climb and work up to 15" above ground may be required.

  6. Ability to reach frequently overhead as well as horizontally while laying on back.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental working conditions vary and employee may encounter vibration, noise, odors, and extremes in temperature and wind as well as exposure to varied weather, varied surfaces, sharp edges, varied lighting and confined and congested areas and occasional exposure to petroleum-based products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and grease, detergent cleaning solutions, dust, fumes and chemicals.
